Separating Fact from FictionSource of the attack on Kenja
Where it began
Ken and Kenja's story whilst shocking, is unfortunately, not unique. Around
the world and throughout human history, many groups and individuals who
have sought to encourage positivity and greater spiritual understanding
have been actively discriminated against and even attacked by those who
stand to lose when individuality, spiritual understanding and freedom
of the human spirit are pursued. We hope that by telling our story, we
can inspire hope in those who have unfairly come under fire, and
enlightenment in those who have ever feared or mistrusted purely on the
basis of heresay and gossip.
Over the past 20 years both Ken Dyers and Kenja have been attacked by spurious 'anti-cult' groups.
These
attacks have stemmed from an organisation in America called Cult
Awareness Network which was a referral group for "deprogramming", the
reprogramming of an individual to adopt another individuals belief
system. Deprogrammers initially employed techniques such as kidnapping,
assault and sexual assault, often coming into conflict with American
authorities.
Finally,
Cult Awareness Network itself collapsed in America in 1995 after a
prosecution by a young man whom they had kidnapped and attempted to
deprogram. Australia provides a fertile and potentially prosperous
ground for deprogramming (often $40,000 a pop). Today it is called
exit-counselling.
The
person who initially brought Cult Awareness Network to Australia was an
ex-Kenja participant. She had been asked to leave Kenja for unethical
behaviour. This precipitated the formation in 1992 of an Australian
group called Cult Aware and now also Cult Information and Family
Support Group.
These
groups and associated individuals have ruthlessly attacked Kenja over
many years. When that attack did not work, and Kenja survived,
stronger, the attackers viciously turned to using the emotion and
sensationalism of child sexual assault charges. These are the easiest
charges to bring against an individual, are highly emotive in content
and deny rational observation or evaluation of the said charges.
